Wajima-born manga artist known for Devilman, Mazinger Z, Cutie Honey and other manga.

His real name is Kiyoshi Nagai.

He is the honorary director of the Go Nagai Wonderland Museum. Born in Wajima City, Ishikawa, he spent his childhood years here. After making his debut with Meakashi Pori Kichi in 1967, he went on to create many hits, including Harenchi Gakuen, Devilman and Cutie Honey.

Nagai’s works have been well-received overseas as well, winning him worldwide popularity. Moreover, in recent years, his manga have been made into live-action films, and he continues to enjoy wide readership that goes beyond national and generational boundaries.

Brief Biography of Go Nagai

1945 Born on September 6 in Wajima City, Ishikawa.
Aims to become manga artist after being introduced to Osamu Tezuka’s Lost World at an early age.
March 1964 Graduates from Tokyo Metropolitan Itabashi High School.
September 1965 Becomes Shotaro Ishinomori’s assistant.
1967 Makes his debut with Meakashi Pori Kichi (November issue of Bokura, published by Kodansha).
1968 Harenchi Gakuen (Shonen Jump, published by Shueisha) becomes a major hit. Becoming a social phenomenon, the manga overturns conventional wisdom in the manga industry.
April 1969 Establishes Dynamic Production Co., Ltd.
1970 Nikkatsu movie Harenchi Gakuen is released.
1972 Devilman, Cutie Honey and others are made into anime for television, and Mazinger Z paves the way for robot manga. Afterwards, anime production continues with Dororon Enma-kun, Great Mazinger, UFO Robo Grendizer and others, and they are broadcast simultaneously in Europe, gaining worldwide popularity.
1978 Becomes a member of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of Japan. Later serves two terms as chairman from 1996 to 2000.
1980 Wins 4th Annual Kodansha Manga Award for Susano Oh.
1989 Makes his video directorial debut with Nagai Go no Kowai Zone.
Later releases Kowai Zone 2 and Kuso Kagaku Ninkyoden Dosuryu directorial works.
June 1997 30th anniversary party is held at the Tokyo Hilton International Hotel, organized by Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of Japan.
Go Nagai 30th Anniversary Exhibit is held at Bunshun Gallery in Ginza.
July 1998 Go Nagai End of Century Exhibit is held at Iwaki City Art Museum.
Exhibit is later taken nationwide to Mitsukoshi Art Gallery (Shinjuku), Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art and Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art.
1999 Go Nagai Newcomer Award is established by Magazine Z (Kodansha).
2000 Devilman Illustrations Exhibition is held at Shibuya PARCO. Science Fiction Manga World Exhibition: Go Nagai and Osamu Tezuka Exhibit is held at the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum.
2004 Cutie Honey (Warner Bros.) and Devilman (Toei) movies are released.
2005 Nagai becomes professor at Osaka University of Arts.
2007 Go-chan Magazine published as a supplement to Monthly Afternoon (Kodansha) to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his debut.
2009 Go Nagai Wonderland Museum is opened. Nagai is appointed honorary director.
